    (Medical):James' death explains why his son William, who was born four weeks after this event, was not baptised until 12 years later. The record of my 3 x gt grandfather's late baptism when he was 12 shows that James was an excise officer.

    He was described as a "Gentleman."James Hayden was of Bishopstone, Salisbury, according to W A Hayden's death notice in The Times in 1938.

    Excise officers were introduced to collect taxes levied on home products such as alcoholic drinks, and as a result were sometimes very unpopular.

    In 1849 the Board of Excise was amalgamated with the Board of Stamps and Taxes to form the Board of Inland Revenue.

    Possible Will leaves this book to his daughter, to improve her mind, but this one was written by himself and beautifully illustrated .
