    Joseph Hobbs Carter, also known by Joel or Joal, was born Apr. 2, 18 45 in Scott Co., VA. He was the eldest son of Andrew Russell and Elizab eth Hobbs Carter. He married Louisa Nancy Morely in Lee County on Nov. 2 , 1865. She was the daughter of William and Sallie Vaught Morely. Her n ame is also found on several records as Nancy Louisa. Joseph and Louisa ( Lulu) had five known children.
    Family legend has it that Joseph and Louisa lived in the Mulberry Ga p area of Hancock Co., TN., near Sneedville. Legend also has it that th is is where their children were born. Charles Morgan's place of birth i s listed as Tennessee on his death record so this is probably accurate.


    During the Civil War, Joseph was listed as Pvt. Joel H. Carter with t he 48th Virginia Infantry Regiment under Gen. Stonewall Jackson and rem ained with this regiment after Gen. Jackson's death. He was then under t he command of Gen. Richard S. Ewell. Among the battles he fought in was t he Battle of Gettysburg. Joseph, along with his father, survived the at tack on Cemetery Hill associated with "Pickett's Charge". Joseph was al so present at Gen. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. While Joseph was figh ting for the Confederacy, Louisa taught school in the Ewing, VA. area n ear Poor Valley Ridge.
    Joseph was killed in a logging accident in the Blackwater, VA. area o n Feb. 16, 1892. He was reportedly struck by a failing tree and receive d a fatal head injury. According to family legend, he is buried near an o ld church in the Mulberry Gap area of Hancock Co., TN.
    After Joseph's death, Louisa moved to the Rose Hill area with the rem aining family. She lived there with son George until her death Aug. 12, 1 906. She is buried in the McDonald Cemetery, Rose Hill, VA.
    Eldest son William Russell died one year before his father. After suf fering from the measles, complications affected his lungs. It is legend ed that his place of burial is at Morely Memorial near Ewing, VA. Sarah a nd Mary Emily are believed to be buried in the McDonald Cemetery, Rose H ill, VA., along with their husbands. George, Charlie and their spouses a re known to be buried in the McDonald Cemetery.
