Obituary, The Advocate, 10 August 1933
Death of Donald Chisholm - The death occurred on August 5, of Donald Alonzo Chisholm, who passed away at the Red Crow Hospital, Thessalon, after a short illness. The deceased was born at St. Catherines in the year 1844 being in his 89th year, was married in Goderich to Emma Burnett, of Sheguiandah on June 15, 1872. Following the trade of a cooper in his early days, he graduated to the sea and sailed the lakes for many years, obtaining eventually his captain's papers. The late Mr. Chisholm served in the Fenian Raid, and was a lifelong member of the L.O.L. and was a great lover of home and family. Fearing his sons would follow him in seafaring, he forsook sailing and farmed for over thirty years on the Manitoulin. His father John Wilson Chisholm was magistrate and lighthouse keeper at Micheals Bay, and the first white man to take up residence on the Island, this was in 1865.
He leaves to mourn his loss, four sons; Alonzo, Manitowaning; Frank, Thessalon; John, Thessalon and Harvey (address unknown); and two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Burnett, Sheguiandah; and Mrs. Chas. Sim, Thessalon. The only surviving sister is Mrs. John Snow, of Spokane, Wash.
The remains were taken to Sheguinah (sic), the funeral taking place on August 7. The pall bearers were all grandsons; Percy Finch, Morley Burnett, Wallace Burnett, Geo. Wright, Reuben Stringer, Robt. Adams.
Cards of Thanks (continuation of above Obituary)
    J. F. Chisholm, family and relatives, wish to thank the staff of the Red Cross Hospital, and all friends and neighbours (especially mentioning John Harvey) for their kindness during the illness and subsequent death of Donald Alonzo Chisholm.
