John Wesley Anderson, a native of the Providence Bay and Carnarvon Area, died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Owen Williamson at Tehkummah on March 21st, 1964, in his 77th year.
The late Mr. Anderson was born in Carnarvon Township, the son of the late John and Rebecca Anderson, and lived practically his whole life in that area. He was married to the late Pearl White in 1912, and from this union, was born a son, Onfrey, who resides at Providence Bay, and a daughter Audrey (Mrs. Owen Williamson), of Tehkummah, with whom he has made his home for the past several years. His wife predeceased him in 1918,and in 1949 he remarried the late Sedania McDermid, who has also predeceased him.
Mr. Anderson farmed for several years and then carried on the trade of a carpenter and builder in the Providence Bay Area, until he was appointed postmaster of the Providence Bay post office in 1940. He held this position until his retirement in 1957. He has always been active and for the past several years has worked in a supervisory capacity with the Manitoulin Rural Telephone Company, in which he was one of the original founders. He was a member of the United Church of Canada, and a Past Master of the Masonic Order, Gore Bay Lodge No. 472.
In addition to his son and daughter, he leaves to mourn his loss, five grand-children, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Galbraith, of Spring Bay, and Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, of Tampa, Florida. One brother James, and two sisters, Mabel and Martha predeceased him.
Funeral services were held at the Providence Bay United Church on March 23rd, under the direction of the Rev. John Staples, assisted by Rev. Bender. The Rev. Frank Haner was guest soloist and Mrs. Grace Dryden was organist. Mr. Murray McDermid was usher. The pall bearers were James F. McDermid, Grant Oakes, Mike Smith, Melvin VanHorn, Warren Legge and Hardy Fulford. A special grave side service was conducted by the officers of the Gore Bay A.F. & A.M., assisted by Masonic Brethren from other parts of the Island. interment was made in Providence Bay Cemetery.
