Note: Marietta Jane Green never married. "Family History" says Jane was sent to help move family belongings with two men, ANDREW WATKINS and JOHN PARRISH. One of these two is the father of George Green but is not necessarily the father of her other children.
Mrs. Mary Buchanan Coffey, a direct descendant of GEORGE GREEN, has a postcard to George dated January 1914. It stated to "come at once" and that his mother was very sick with a cancer of the breast. This postcard was sent from Swain County, NC. SOURCE: Mary Coffey InfoAve.Net> removed spaces to e-mail
GEORGE GREEN lived with the WATKINS some as he was growing up. He was living with them at the age of 3 years in 1880 Charlestown (now Bryson City), Swain Co, NC Federal Census with his mother as "Servant".
The Watkins had two other children that we know of: Andrew WATKINS who later lived in California but is buried in Swain Co, NC. Elvira WATKINS who married Will Monteith - issue: May Monteith, Pearl Monteith
ANDREW WATKINS b. Oct. 1842, d. Sept 7, 1918, his wife SARAH MELVINA "Sally" WIGGINS WATKINS b. June 03, 1840 Macon Co, NC, d. May 22, 1914, are buried in the Randall Cemetery, Swain County, NC. Listed in the Fontana Dam Project. From Bryson City, take S.R. 1333 (Toot Hollow Rd.) two and 1/10 miles. The cemetery is on the left of the road. Easy to find, it is right beside the road.
JOHN PARRISH lived on Conley's Creek, Swain County, NC.
"Family History" says Jane was 14 when she had George, but the dates do not agree. Jane was born in 1845, George Green was born in 1879. Also Jane had other children before George.
Jane is supposed to be buried in Swain County, NC. But I have not found a death certificate or gravemarker. Delayed birth certificate for George Green in Swain County, NC gives Jane as mother, born in Rutherford County, NC in 1845.
JANE GREEN is on the 1850 Census is in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
Henderson County, NC, was formed in 1838 from Buncombe County, NC.
Her father was William Green (died in the War between the States). Family History says he died at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. However the William Green in the 16th Regiment from Jackson County, NC with the correct age, says he was sent home because of illness, maybe he died after he returned home. Family History says her mother was named Katherine (Catherine) Rodgers. My grandmother refered to her as Kate. ) Katherine remarried Isaac Taylor Sims Sherrill (ref. Swain County marriage records, married Jan. 12, 1880). Jane did have brothers Jesse N. Green, Pinkney Green and Zachariah Taylor Green. (Looks like her son George Zackery Taylor Green was named after his uncle).
William Green and family are on the 1860 Census for Jackson County, NC.
Jesse N. Green fought in a regiment from Jackson County, NC.
Marietta Green is listed on the 1900 Census for Haywood County, North Carolina with J. T. Kilby and wife Laura (Green) Kilby. Lists her as born in 1854 (probably incorrect). Interestingly it gives Jane as a widow, with 11 living children!?? We only know of 5 for sure. The Kilby's are living next door to William Taylor Wilson and Martha Rachel Wilson, brother and sister. Martha Rachel Ann Wilson married George Zachery Taylor Green, son of Jane Green, and brother of Laura Green Kilby. This is our Marietta Jane Green.
JANE GREEN was forced to name the father of her children in court:

Swain County, NC -- October 16, 1871 -- Bastardy Bonds Marthy Jane Green vs. A. C. Wiggins (Andrew C. Wiggins b:25 APR 1844 Macon Co), Andrew Watkins SOURCE: Another researcher via e-mail
NOTE: Bastardy Bonds were devised to protect the counties of North Carolina from being responsible for the support of illegitimate children. Warrants were issued to unmarried mothers to appear in court to be questioned and asked the name of the child's father. The named father was also brought to court and required to post a bond. If the woman refused to name the father, she was responsible for posting the bond. If she refused to post bond or name the father, she would be sent to jail. Recording of Bastardy Bonds can be found in county court minutes.
