    My Notes: Apparently his mother, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hays Keith Allen, w as not living with him in 1840 Jackson Co, FL. I have yet to discover whe re she was between 1830-1870.

    DAVID H. KEITH had jury duty and appears in Book "B" of Geneva County, Ala bama.

    David H. Keith owned a great deal of land in Holmes County, Florida, as we ll as the land he owned in Geneva County, Alabama, some of which is alo ng the Choctawhatchee River. Some of the land is at R15W, T5N. He owned t he Steamboat "8th of January" which ran the river from the gulf to Genev a. The steamboat was 98 tons and was built in Portsmouth, Ohio in 814 6. It originally operated out of Cincinnati. Ohio. The Steamboat sank on t he Choctawhatchee Riber at a place now known as the Eighth of January Cuto ff, just below January Island, five miles below Cerro Gordo and just nor th of Caryville.

    "Geneva, Alabama - A History":
    "Mercantile business in Geneva: David H. Keith resided here his lifetim e, died early in 1860. He left Jim, Jonah, and Tom, three boys, one daught er and a wife. Mr. Jonah Keith is still in Geneva in the mercantile busine ss. He is at present a Representative of Geneva County in the Legislature. "

    The Daily Alabama Journal has several articles about Coffee county being r epresented in the state convention concerning succession from the Unio n. They are dated 1850/1851, nearly ten years before the War of Northe rn Aggression. Last article entitled "Union Meeting in Coffee", elects fi ve men to review the delegates to be sent to the convention that will repr esent Coffee County, AL, and my David H. Keith was one of them. (Daily Ala bama Journal, April 21, 1851, page 2). Thought this was so cool.
