NICKLAS KUHLMANN or Nicholas Kuhlman, Americanized their surname to COLEMAN after arriving on American soil. The whole family immigrated to America aboard the "Ship Pennsylvania Packet", arriving 31 October 1768. Nicholas Coleman, and Jacob Coleman (believed to be a son of Nicholas Coleman) also signed the ship roster 03 October 1768. The Coleman family, like so many other German immigrants, made the long trek down the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, through the Valley of Virginia, to the foot hills of Carolina. They settled in the Dutch Buffalo Creek area of what is now Cabarrus County, North Carolina. My branch of COLEMAN eventually migrated even further west through Georgia into present day southeastern or "Wiregrass" Alabama.
The wife of NICKLAS KUHLMANN aka NICHOLAS COLEMAN was Margaret (maiden name unknown). Nicolas and Margaret Coleman reared a family of at least three sons. Their names were Jacob Coleman (born prior to 1755, died 1786), Mark Coleman (born prior to 1755, died 1817), and Philip Coleman (born prior to 1755, died after 5 May, 1828).
---- About Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties, NC: Cabarrus County, North Carolina, was formed in 1792 from Mecklenburg County. It was named in honor of Stephen Cabarrus, (1754-1808) of Edenton, several times a member of the Legislature and four times speaker of the House of Commons. It is in the south central section of the State and is bounded by Stanly, Union, Mecklenburg, Iredell and Rowan counties. The present land area is 364.10 square miles and the 1990 population was 98,935. In 1795 an act was passed naming commissioners to erect a courthouse on the land of Samuel Hugey which had already been selected as a proper place for the county seat. They were to lay out the town of Concord. Concord was incorporated in 1806, and is the county seat. Source URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccabar2/index.htm .
