Note: Honorable W. A. Parker of North Carolina, eminent Alderman family historian, writes that john Mathis first wife was Phoebe Alderman, born April 11th, 1783 daughter of David Alderman, Republican Soldier and that there were eleven children by her as named on p. 177 of Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia Volume 1, beginning with David and Through Rebecca the eleventh child. John Mathis was shown as Phoebe's husband in the Alderman record (Vol. 1 Pg 5 of Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia). This is in conflict with the historical collections of the late W. Henry Griffin, Berrien County Historian who gives John Mathis's first wife as shown on p. 177 of Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia Volume 1. Mr Griffin's writings anent John Mathis were based largely on a conversation he had in 1919 with the last surviving child, Mrs. Susannah Cowart, age 85 years at that time, and the D.A.R. has accepted that record as correct. Mr. Alderman is supported in his statement by communications from three or four grandchildren of John Mathis and his first wife, they stating that it had always been their information in the family that their Mathis grandmother was Phoebe Alderman before marriage. There seems to be no doubt that Phoebe Alderman did marry John Mathis but the Compiler had assumed that, that John Mathis lived and died in North Carolina. In the light of these circumstances, we agree with Mr. Alderman as to the first wife being Phoebe Alderman.
Mr. Mathis was a member of Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church as stated. Uniting with it by letter August 17th, 1839. The church roll shows he died a member August 20th, 1851. His second wife, Susannah "Susie" Edmondson Mathis, was received into the same church, and baptized September 18th, 1841; she died a member in 1863.
