    Henry King (bishop of Chichester) lived in the palace at Chichester until the siege of December 1642, when he fled (not, as reported, taken prisoner) first to Petworth, then to Albury. He lived with his widowed sister, Elizabeth Holt, and her family, presumably in the house he had rented from George Aungier since 1634, close to his second cousin George Duncombe, with whom he was frequently involved in financial transactions.

    King wrote 'An Elegy Upon the Death of Mr Edward Holt.' 4

    • Note: It is thought that Edward Holte met Elizabeth through his friendship with her brothers at Hart Hall (Hertford College), Oxford. However the match was so displeasing to his father, Sir Thomas Holte, that he threatened to disinherit his son, and was only prevented by the personal intervention of Charles I. Sir Thomas never became reconciled to the match. 6 2
