  • Note: The Visitation of Surrey has a pedigree of Bennett which includes Sir Thomas. However it lists him as the son of the Richard Bennet(t) who is here and elsewhere identified as his brother, and Richard's wife Elizabeth Tisdale. No generation is identified earlier than this Richard. In addition, siblings are listed for Sir Thomas, who are not found elsewhere - especially a Ralph Bennett of Morden, Surrey, and wife Alice Harris, plus their progeny. 5

    He was Alderman of Vintry, 7 Feb 1593/4; of Lime Street, 8 Feb 1603/4; and of Bassishaw, 13 Jan 1611, till his death 16 Feb 1626/7, having been chosen to, but not having accepted of, the Tower ward in June 1621. He was Sheriff 1594-95, and Mayor 1603-04. He was Knighted (with 17 other Aldermen) at Whitehall, 26 July 1603. During his Mayoralty the plague continued in London, and is stated (in his Funeral certificate) to have occurred there also during his Shrievalty [1594-95] "as also his last [1625] and greatest visitacion at what tyme he remained only the Father and Protector of all the comfortless inhabitants of that cittie in all their extremitie, to his immortal praise; and example of pietie and fortytude". On the 12 March 1603/4, the King, Queen, and Prince of Wales arrived at the Tower of London, whence they went, on the 15th, in State, thro' the city to Whitehall, thus performing that part of the Coronation ceremony which (owing to the plague) had been omitted the previous July.
    He was President of Bridewell & Bethlem Hospital 1606-13, and Gov. of the Irish Society 1615 ; was admitted, 1 Aug. 1619 (with 8 other citizens) to Gray's Inn. He purchased the estate of Beachampton and Calverton, Bucks, about 1609. He m., about 1580, Mary, sister of John Taylor (living in May, 1630, as "John Taylor, the Elder "), da. of Robert Taylor, of London, Mercer. She d. at her husband's house in St Olave's Jewry, 2 & was bur. 22 Dec. 1624, in Mercers' Chapel. Funeral certif, in Coll. of Arms (I., xxii., iii). He d. at the same house 16 Feb. & was bur. 22 March 1626/7, in Mercer's Chapel. Fun. certif. in Coll. of Arms (I., xxiii., 14). Will (a) dat. 18 Nov. 1626 to 26 Janv 1626/7; pr. 20 Feb. 1626/7 (122 Skinner).

  • Note:
    Sir Thomas Bennett became the Lord Mayor of London shortly after Queen Elizabeth I died (her death was on 24 March 1603); and accompanied James I and VI to London on his first arrival.
    On his record Valerie Hope writes: Sir Thomas Bennett (1603) left money for prisoners, as very many did, for without these donations many prisoners without friends would have starved. He also left money for the clothing of 'poor and naked men women and children wandering in London that have no dwelling', for the poor and aged in Wallingford, his home town, and for the poor of the Mercers, his own Company. 2
