I extensively reviewed the Beecher family records of the Dukes County Historical Society. The late Doris Stoddard was their resident Genealogist and the Beechers were a favorite of hers. Donald Lines Jacobus does an extensive study of the first five generations in his treatise FAMILIES OF ANCIENT NEW HAVEN. Milton Rugoff did an excellent biography on Lyman Beecher and his children in his 1984 book THE BEECHERS. It mentions Joseph Beecher, our common ancestor with Lyman and Erastus. Erastus Beecher married Naomi Crowell Cook, widow of Captain William Cook, in Nantuckett. She had a son and daughter by him before she married Captain Beecher and moved to Martha's Vineyard. They had four daughters, of which one was Jane C. Beecher, my great-great grandmother. Jane married Shubael Dunham Smith and they had nine children, three of whom left descendents. Shubael D. Smith, Jr. married Lydia Tucker of New Bedford. They had one child, my grandfather William Tucker Smith. He grew up and after high school became a sales representative for International Silver, travelling the country. On the train to Memphis he met Linnie Olivia Smith and shortly afterward they eloped. Their daughter Margaret died at 16, but their son Drayton Beecher Smith grew to adulthood, met and married Margaret Williams of Benoit, Mississippi, and she gave birth to me and my identical twin brother Vassar in April of 1949, and our younger brother James Tucker Smith in November of 1950.
