Dr. Edward Orton was born March 9, 1829, in the state of New York. He
received his early education under the direct supervision of his father,
Rev. Samuel G. Orton, and later graduated from Hamilton College at the
age of eighteen years. Dr. Orton has been a college professor in Ohio for
many years, at first in Antioch College and afterwards in Ohio State
University and was in turn made President in each institution. He has
been State Geologist of Ohio since 1869. His Geological Reports on the
formation and location of the various minerals that abound in that state
are highly prized by the State authorities and by capitalists interested
in the coal, iron, oil and natural gas industries. In 1896 he was elected
President of the Geological Society of America and in 1898 President of
the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In 1875 Dr. Orton married for his second wife Anna Davenport Torney, of
Millbury, Mass., by whom he has two children--Louisa Taft Orton, born
June, 1877, graduated at Wellesley in June, 1899; Samuel Torney Orton,
born Oct. 15, 1879, is a sophomore in Ohio State University.
