HUMPHREY STAFFORD, Knt., of Perton, Amblecote, Bramshall, and
Littywood (in Bradley), Staffordshire, Southwick (in North Bradley),
Wiltshire, and, in right of Hooke, Dorset, Sheriff of Staffordshire and
of Somerset and Dorset, Knight of the Shire for Staffordshire and for
Dorset, son and heir, born about 1379. He married before October 1397
ELIZABETH MAUTRAVERS, younger daughter and co-heiress of John
Mautravers, Knt., of Crowell, Oxfordshire, and Hooke, Stapelford, and
Over Kentcombe, Dorset, by Elizabeth, daughter of William d'Aumarle,
Knt. She was born about 1378 (aged 8 in 1386, 22 in 1406). They had
five sons and two daughters, including Alice. About 1395/1403, he
served with a company of lancers in the retinue of his cousin, Edmund
Stafford, Earl of Stafford. In 1402 she was heiress to her sister,
Maud Mautravers, wife of John Dinham, Knt. In 1403 he entered the
service of the Prince of Wales, with his own contingent of four
esquires, and one hundred archers. In his later years, he was styled
Sir Humphrey "of the silver hand", apparently because of his use of
an artifical limb after losing one of his own. His wife, Elizabeth,
died in 1422. SIR HUMPHREY STAFFORD died testate (Reg.Chichele 2:
620-624) 27 May 1442. They were buried at Abbotsbury Abbey, Dorset.
