    Castle of Carytaina

The castle is built on a steep rocky outcrop to the NW of the plain of Megalopolis. It was founded in 1245 by Hugues De Bruyere. In 1320 it was purchased from its Frankish castellan by Andronicos Palaeologos and remained under the Greeks until 1458, but later changed hands several times: it was first occupied by the Venetians for a very short period, then by the Turks (1460-1685), again by the Venetians (1685-1715), and finally by the Turks (1715-1821), until its liberation by the Greeks. It was repaired in 1826 by Theodoros Kolokotronis, the famous warrior of the Greek Revolution, who used it as his headquarters during his fight against Ibrahim Pasha.
