Born while mother captured by the Indians in the Minnesota Sioux uprising of 1862. Raised by aunt, Jane Huggins Holtsclaw.

From John Huggins Genealogy book: This child was born after his father's death at the hands of the Indians. His mother, according to family tradition, was watching from the house and put her hand up to her face in horror when she saw her husband killed. This, it is said, "marked" her unborn child, who was born with a birthmark on his cheek. Amos said of his growing up: "Another thing that my grandfather thought was very funny occurred when I tried to catch a rat. Corn was kept in corn cribs that stood on supports about two feet from the ground. Nearly always there was some shelled corn on the ground. I saw rats eating, with their long tails sticking out from under the crib. I slowly knelt down, caught
hold of the tail of one of the rats and started to pull it. BANG! The rat turned around and took a nip at me. The scar remained on my thumb for years afterward."
