  • Note: He was knighted at the Coronation of King James I on May 21, 1421. 1
  • Event: Note 1424
  • Note: His father Murdoch Stewart, Duke of Albany, like his father before him, acted as regent of Scotland during the imprisonment of King James I in England. As regent, Albany continued his father's policy of delaying the release of the king. Finally, after payment of the ransom of 40,000, King James returned to Scotland in 1424 to find his realm in chaos. Albany had proven to be both corrupt and a poor administrator. Without waiting for his coronation, James arrested Alexander's elder brother Walter Stewart (the designated heir to Fife, Lennox and Menteith). Although Walter and Andrew's father the Duke of Albany was the presumptive heir to the throne until such time as James produced a son, he had surrendered his office of governor without demur as soon as James returned from England. Albany's son Walter Stewart posed a much greater threat; he had never concealed his hostility to the new king. Walter was sent to the bleak fortress of the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth. This was soon followed by the arrest of Walter and Andrew's maternal grandfather the Earl of Lennox. Before he could make any further moves, James had to consolidate his position on the throne and the revenues of the crown. His coronation as King of Scotland was held at Scone Abbey, Perthshire, on May 21, 1424. Andrew Stewart was even knighted on this day, despite his brother Walter's arrest. It was attended by all the bishops, prelates and magnates of the kingdom--a deliberate display of restored royal prestige. The Duke of Albany, in his role as the Earl of Fife, himself placed the crown on James' head, despite that his son and heir Walter was now in detention. 5 3 1 6
  • Event: Note 22 MAY 1424
  • Note: On May 22, 1424, at Perth, King James summoned a four day meeting of Parliament; it passed a huge amount of legislation further consolidating royal power and revenues, including decreeing the punishment for "rebels against the king's person" (forfeiture of lands). 5
