Served in the Union Army during the Civil War; Dakota territory attorney general, 1866-69; U.S. District Attorney for Dakota Territory, 1866-69; secretary of Dakota Territory, 1874-83. Died in 1891. Burial location unknown. Hand County, SD is named for him.

    The record shows George H. Hand living with his parents, grandmother and seven siblings. George was born in Ohio and was 12 years old at the time of the census on August 1st., placing his birthdate around 1838.

    The record shows George Hand living with his wife Helen (H.M.) and five children: Carl (11y), Josie (9y), Stella (8y), Eddy (7y), Arthur (5y), Grace (2y). and Lulu (11 months). George was 33 years old at the time of the census on August 16th. He was a lawyer with real estate valued at $13,000 and personal estate valued at $500. The record also shows he was born in Ohio.

    The record shows George H. Hand living with his wife Helen M. (40y) and children: Carlton H. (20y), Helen J. (19y), Stella K. (17y), Edgar M. (16y), Arthur W. (14y), Grace A. (12y). and Lulu E. (10y). Nettie Thompson (20y) worked as a servant and lived with the family. George was 42 years old at the time of the census on June 1st. He was the Secretary of the Dakota Territory. The record also shows he was born in Ohio, his father in New York, and his mother in Ohio.

    [4] GEORGE A. HAND, secretary of Dakota territory and acting governor from the illness of Governor Howard until the appointment of his successor, a period of almost one year, was born at Akron, Ohio, on the 9th of August, 1837. He was a lawyer and served in the Civil war as a member of the Chicago Board of Trade Battery. He came to Dakota and settled at Yankton in 1865 and was two years later appointed United States attorney. Later he was register of the land office and in 1874 was made secretary of the territory, a position he filled for eight years. After closing his official career he became the counsel for the Northwestern Railway for Dakota and served until his death, which occurred while attending a session of the legislature at Pierre on March 10, 1891.
