John N. Rice is one of those jolly fellows, who believes in making others happy if it can be done with a smiling face and kind words. He is located on a prosperous little farm, which he tills in the most skillful manner. He also gives attention to a choice little dairy. Mr. Rice is a grandson of Daniel Rice who came from Vermont to Smithfield when the township was yet new.
    He (Daniel!) had two sons,
    John N. and
Henry Henry is yet living in the West. John is dead. He lived on the place which is now occupied by his son John.

Glad to be of help. I'd love any additional Forrest material you come across in your search.
I notice that I did not comment on the Rise/Rice question. Spelling was not at all consistent in any of the records I've seen. I suspect that often neither the recorder or the respondent could spell properly. Thus anything that comes close is a prospective record for you. I have Forest,Forrest,Forrist,Farrist, and McForrester for this line of my families.
I'd like to suggest a couple of sources to look at. I don't know of anyone who has looked at Guilford land records. I think they go back to about 1790. There is a National Archives facility up in Western Mass (Pittsfield) and another facility in Springfield MA (don't know whose) that are supposed to have have large collections covering the settlement of the Connecticut river valley. They are on my list for future visits, but I have not been to either.
    A couple of thoughts,

Jim: Thank you for the response! You have given me very strong reason to believe that Daniel was of Guilford, Windham Co., VT at the time of his marriage to Esther. Earlier records have him as born at Brattleboro, Windham, VT 1788. A Daniel Rice is found in Windham Co., VT in 1790 but our Daniel would only have been two years of age at that time. Possibly Daniel's father was a Daniel as well. Brattleborn and Guilford will be the focus from this time forward. Many thanks! Bob Rice, Mechanicsburg, PA
