Madame Maria de Victorica was an agent for Germany. Her father, Baron Hans von Kretschman, was a general, her mother, Countess Jenny von Gustedt, a diplomat. An accomplished linguist, she entered the German Secret Service in 1910. She married an Argentine citizen by the name of Manuel Gustave Victorica, himself arrested by French authorities in 1917. The British tried to track her down as early as 1914, but an exchange of secret-ink messages allowed American authorities to find her. She had developed a plot to import explosives to the United States concealed in holy figures. She was arrested April 27, 1918, tried and convicted of espionage against the United States. She died in prison in 1920.
