  • Note:
From Margaret Howison's notes: Thos his tombstone states he was born Aug 17, 1821, his christening Dec 3 1820 would indicate his birth was Aug 17 1820. He served in the Rebellion of 1837 with Thomas.

John and Eunice lived in a one story log house on the Island and farmed. In 1861, with seven children, they moved to Lucknow. Thier second child Nancy Louise had died of fever in 1855 and is buried on the Island.

In Lucknow, John operated a general store. Here their last two children were born. During the Reil Insurrection of 1870, John was created a Major in charge of transport by the then Governor General of Canada, Sir Francis Barnhead.

In 1882, the family moved west to Manitoba, only two daughters and their families remained in the east. John and Eunice homesteaded near Crystal City, then crossed into North Dakaot where he farmed until 1902 when they retired to a cottage on Moffat Avenue in Pilot Mound.

Eunice died on Sept 10, 1904. The oldest daughter Eliza Jane Smith again widowed, moved from Lucknow to keep house for her father. John died Sept 9, 1910 at Langham Saskatchewan. No doubt on a visit to his grandson, Frank Rooklidge who had a hardware business there. John and Eunice are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Pilot Mound

John was a robust, jovial individual. Both John and Eunice were very kind to the grandchildren, their home a joy to visit. Their Diamond Wedding Anniversary was celebrated Jan 1, 1904 in Pilot Mound Hotel. Their eight children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren were present. Tehir daughter, Eunice Marie Secord had died two years before but her widower, Charls Secord, daughter Maud Buckland and grandchild Frances Buckland, attended[Rich.Trel.FTW]

    John Treleaven (1820)

John Treleaven was christened in Lanlivery, Cornwall, England with the surname TRELIVING. When emigrating to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1834, the family name changed to TRELEAVEN.

John lived in Lucknow where all ten of his children were born.

John served on the side of the crown in the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837 and held the office of adjutant General under Sir Francis Bondhead. Many years later John served as a Major in charge of transport during the Riel Rebellion of 1870 in Manitoba, and retained the title of "Major" during the balance of his long life.

On January 1, 1844 he married Eunice Willard of Amherst Island. The copy of the marriage register shows Thomas Treleaven as one of the witnesses. Eunice was born at Herkimer, New York, and is reputed to be a cousin of the Frances Willard who became so prominent as an early leader in the Women's Temperance movement in the U.S.A.

In 1861 John and Eunice moved with their growing family from Amherst Island to Lucknow, Ontario where John operated a general store until he moved with most of his family and several relatives to Manitoba in 1882.
"On Monday, evening last,a complimentary Oyster Supper was given at Whitely's Hotel in honor of those of our citizens who are about leaving us to seek their fortunes in the Northwest. The following were the guests of the evening: Messers. John Treleaven, Wm. Treleaven, J.G. Treleaven, C. Secord, J.W. Christie, Alfred Robertson, W.U. Little. G.W. Berry, John Little, Robert Clendenning and W.E.Tweed.... After the usual loyal and patriotic toasts the health of the chief guest of the evening, John Treleaven, Esq. was proposed and received with enthusiasm. The chairman in proposing the toast paid a well deserved tribute to the character of Mr. Treleaven, and to the high esteem in which he is universally held in this community, and while regretting to see so many active and energetic young men leaving our Province, he hoped it would be to their permanent advantage and he felt sure the best wishes of their many Lucknow friends would accompany them to their new homes in the great west. Mr. James Gordon then presented Mr. Treleaven, on behalf of the company, with a handsome silver headed ebony cane for himself and an elegant silver cake basket for Mrs. Treleaven, accompanying the presentation with a few suitable remarks. Mr. Treleaven was completely taken by surprise and replied in a feeling and appropriate manner....."

He homesteaded near Crystal City Manitoba for a few years, crossed the line and farmed near his son Frank at Hannah North Dakota until 1902. He then retired to Pilot Mound, Manitoba, on Moffat Ave.

John and Eunice celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on New Year's Day 1904. Eleven of their twelve children were present save for Eunice (Mrs. Charles Secord), who had passed away two years previously. Of their fifty-five children, grand children, and great-grand children, thirty-nine were present to celebrate. Many telegrams of congratulations and costly gifts were received from friends and relatives in Chicago, Winnipeg, Lucknow, Ridgetown, Morden and other Manitoba points.

Notes from Gerry Towns: John Treleaven died in Langham Saskatchewan, but his remains are buried in Greenwood cemetery, Pilot Mound, Manitoba.
