  • ID: I2428
  • Name: Martha Farris
  • Name: Martha Gatliff
  • Sex: F
  • Change Date: 26 SEP 2010
  • Note:
  • Death: 1799
  • Will: 16 JUL 1799 Monroe, Virginia
  • Note: The second entry in Book A is Martha Gatliff. She leaves her estate to her children Charles, Hannah Neely, Leah Tonie, Mary Pine, Happy Willey, Abby Trimble, and grandson James Willey.
  • Note: Martha/Margaret, James Gatlive's wife, is hard to identify clearly in the historical record. There are some genealogists who confuse Martha with Margaret Evans, the second wife of Charles Gatliff. It is clear Margaret Evans is not James' wife because he is too young (under 21 at the time of his father's death) and there are specific references to Charles as the husband.
  • Note: Cash paid widow Gatlive from John Cloyd's estate.
  • Note: 24 acres on Craigs Creek, a branch of the James River.
  • Note: DAR #A 091956
  • Birth: ABT 1725
  • Note: Property owned by Martha Gatlive, widow of James, shows "no inhabitants".
  • Note: Martha Gatliff is listed as a head of family in the first US census in the printed publication.
  • Note:
  • Note: In the area now Monroe County, Francis Long had a suvey done. His land adjoins that of Martha Gatliff.
  • Note:
Date unclear. Lyman Chalkley in his book reports the following from Augusta records:

McDaniel vs. Gatlive--O. S. 171; N. S. 60--Martha Gatlive died in Botetourt, intestate, leaving heirs, viz: Charles Gatlive, Hannah Dailey, William Wiley and Hafy, his wife, Wm. Toney and Leah, his wife, Thomas Christian and Rebecca, his wife, Joseph Goar and Martha, his wife, Thomas, Nancy, James, Mary and Alexander Pine.

Rebecca Christian and Martha Goar are children of Mary and Alexander Pine. It would appear Mary and Alexander have died prior to this record and these are their heirs.
  • Note: Report on roads and surveying "from Gatlive's up".
  • Note: Zachariah Callaway granted land adjoining that of Martha Gatliff and Francis Long.
  • Note: Court reports a lawsuit with Martha Gatliff as plaintiff and Jonathon Smith as defendant.
  • Note: 335 acres
