  • ID: I054
  • Name: Augusta Covell 1
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 6 MAY 1828 in Carroll, Chautauqua Co., NY 2 3 4
  • Death: 31 JAN 1913 in Dover (now Stayman), Chelan Co., WA 2 5
  • Burial: Fraternal (IOOF) Cemetery, Chelan, Chelan Co., WA 6 7
  • Note:
Augusta's record from Higgens Funeral Home, Chelan, WA, reads as follows:
    Jan 31, 1913 (see note)
    Augusta B. Covell
    Aged 84-7-25
Note: Charles M. Covell's record from Higgens Funeral Home has the same initial date as the date of death on his Certificate of Death. Therefore, the Higgens Funeral Home date is the date of death, not the date of burial.

Jan 31, 1913, minus 84 yrs., 7 mos., 25 days gives a date of birth of June 7, 1828. However, the 1900 census shows Augusta was born in May, 1828. Therefore, we conclude that there was an error in calculating the age at death, and it should have read 84-8-25, giving a birth date of May 6, 1828, consistent with the 1900 census.

Augusta Covell is buried in Fraternal Cemetery, Chelan, Chelan Co., WA. It was named as the IOOF Cemetery on Augusta's record from Higgens Funeral Home. The burial was originally Lot 1 Block 30. Current records refer to it as N 31. The cemetery record, and her grave marker have her name as Agusta (sic) B. Correll (sic). She is buried next to her brother, Charles Covell, whose name is also incorrectly spelled Correll.

Obituary in Chelan (Washington), Leader, Feb 6, 1913, page 1:
"Miss Covill, an aged lady whose home was on the south side of the Chelan Butte, died last Saturday of apoplexy and was buried in the Chelan cemetery Monday."
Feb 6, 1913, the date of the newspaper, was a Thursday, therefore, "last Saturday" was Feb 1, 1913.

1855 Census: Town of South Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY: Augusta was living with her mother and siblings. States that Augusta was born in Chautauqua Co., NY.
1880 Census: Town of South Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY: Augusta was living with siblings Edmund, Lewis, and Emma (Emeline).
1889 Signed an affidavit, as a resident of Barron Co., WI, in the military service pension file of her brother-in-law Alonzo J. Barton.
1900 Census: City of Barron, Barron Co., WI: Augusta was living with her sister Lucy (Covell) Barton. States that Augusta's birth date was May, 1828.
1910 Census: Lakeside Precinct, Chelan Co. WA: Augusta was living with her siblings Charles and Emma.
All censuses show Augusta as single.

Note: The LDS 1880 census shows Augusta as 22 years old. This was an error in reading her age from the census. At first glance, it appears to be 22, but careful comparison to other numbers on the same page of the census shows that this is 52, not 22.

Also, see Notes for Charles Malford Covell, Augusta's brother, with whom she was living when she died.

    Biographical sketch:

Augusta B. Covell was born on May 6, 1828, in Carroll, Chautauqua County, New York. She died at age 84 on January 31, 1913, while living with her brother Charles and sister Emeline (Emma) in Dover (now Stayman), Chelan County, Washington. Augusta is buried next to her brother Charles in Fraternal Cemetery (originally IOOF Cemetery), near the city of Chelan in Chelan County, Washington. Augusta never married and had no children.

According to census data, Augusta lived with her brothers Edmund and Lewis, and sister Emeline (Emma), in South Valley, Cattaraugus County, New York, from 1843 through at least 1880. On May 25, 1889, in Barron County, Wisconsin, Augusta B. Covell signed, in her own hand, a statement that she was a resident of Barron County, Wisconsin, that she had been present when her sister Lucy married Alonzo J. Barton on July 4, 1866, (in South Valley) and that she was present when he died on October 14, 1888, in Barron County, Wisconsin. The statement is in Alonzo's service pension file, WC 264387. This places Augusta's removal from South Valley to Barron, Wisconsin, between late 1880 and October, 1888, and she was living with her sister Lucy in Barron in 1900. When the Covell families left Barron shortly after the turn of the 20th century, Augusta moved to Dover in Chelan County, Washington, with her brother Charles.
