Obituary of John J. O'Connor in St. Paul Dispatch, July 9, 1924, pg. 1:
Throngs Pay Final Tribute to O'Connor
Kindness of By-Gone Days Remembered by Mourners of Dead Chief
The good deeds of John J. O'Connor came to life today and passed in silent prcession past his coffin. It was a never ending stream it seemed that entered the dim chapel of O'Halloran & Murphy, 120 West Sixth street, and paused to look for the last time at the countenance of the "Big Fellow". Men, Women of Many Types. There were men and women there of many types, the white, the black, the yellow; the rich and the poor; those whose names appear frequently in the society columns and other who many times have been listed on police books. But nearly every man and woman of the throng typlified some act of kindness some long past deed of charity done by the man who served St. Paul so many years as its chief of police. A woman of middle age, respecitable, the mother of a good family, held a handkerchief to her face as she sank down on a seat after viewing the quiet face, that restued under the softening light of two wax tapers. Police Chief Gave "Lift". She does not live in St. Paul, once she did. She was one of those girls dragged by circumstance to the brink of the laud of living shame. A gruff police chief pulled her back and gave the "lift" that saved her. He is dead, but that good deed lived again today in the wet eyes of the woman. A man and wife alighted from a chaufeur-driven limousine. They were old and walked slowly down the chapel aisle. Years before they had faced public disgrace through the wild career of their son, a youth who seemed beyond all control of force or reason. Apparently he was headed for prison as fast as a man can travel. Youth Saved, Dies Hero. John O'Connor took him out to his quiet farm and kept him there for a time. The youth pulled himself back to decency and died a hero in the World War. Two prayers were breathed for the soul of John O'Connor as the aged couple came from the still chapel. Others who filled past in the procession during the morning whould be classed purhaps as "bums", "vags" and hangers on society's darker side. But each brought with him a living memory of some kindly deed. The body of Mr. O'Connor arrived in St. Paul early today, from California, and was met by a group of relatives and friends, including many members of the police force. Veteran Policemen on Guard. Veteran policemen were detailed as a guard of honor at the casket during the day and evening while the body lies in state. Many other police officers came in during the morning to mutter a faint last farewell. Other friends sent elaborate floral pieces. Funeral services will be held at the O'Hallora and Murphy chapel at 9:30 AM Thursday and at the Cathedral at 10 AM. Most of the city's policement will attend in uniform.

***Another obituary of John J. O'Connor, including a picture of the procession into the St. Paul Cathedral and a lot of information about his life and the respect citizens of St. Paul had for their former police chief is in the St. Paul Dispatch, July 10, 1924, pg. 1.
