  • Note: !Jonathan was the most prominent and prosperous Hale of his generation.He inherited from his father "All that Lott of land whereon I now live", which was the strip running back from the river and includingpart of Wright's Island, and he also inherited land from his wealthy father-in-law. Among other things he inherited from his mother two cherished objects - a silver cup and a featherbed. He bought and sold land in the town and in his later years he paid the highest land taxes in Glastonbury. He was elected to the General Court off-and-on for thirty years, served as Auditor of the Colony, and from 1739 to 1772 he was Justice of the Peace in Glastonbury. "The History of Ancient Wethersfield Connecticut"...(see Samual Hale,Sr., for full citation); v.II, p. 406 EPITAPH (same source): "Here lies interred the remains of Jonathan Hale, Esq., who having served his generation in several offices of trust with faithfulness, fell asleep, July 16, 1772, in the 76th year of his age." From the lists of Representatives of the Town of Glastenbury: Jonathan Hale "Son of Samuel, the 2d", served 1735 through 1755, also 1762 and1763. From 1735 to 1751 he served with a Thomas Welles (who served also 1728 and 1730 -1734), presumably descended from Samuel Welles, Sr.----Rev. Alonzo B. Chapin, D.D; Glastenbury for Two Hundred Years, A Centennial Discourse, May 18th, A.D. 1853; Hartford, CT (Case,Tiffany and Company) 1853, p. 205 "Clerks of Schools".
