Daniel Howell, born about 1688 at Livewell, Gloucester (now Camden) Co., NJ, married about 1710, Elsie Reading, the daughter of Col. John Reading. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters, all born in Amwell, Hunderdon, NJ: Elizabeth, Daniel, John, Joseph, Benjamin and Mary. This Daniel was one of the early settlers of Amwell, where he received l and from his father-in-law, and was active in public service: 1719 - on first grand jury in Hunterdon Co.; 1721 - first to hold office of coroner; 1722 - one of the first assessors; 1723 - justice of the peace; 1727- associate judge of the court of common pleas and commissioned a Captain in the Amwell Township Militia. He was a farmer , a miller and was engaged in mining copper. Apparently he also was an overseer for some of his father-in-law's properties. About 1731 he operated the Reading Ferry which then became Howell's Ferry. When he died in 1733, Joseph and Benjamin inherited their father's copper furnace. In 1746 Benjamin was granted a patent for a ferry over the Delaware to land in Amwell (at the foot of Ferry Street in present-day Stockton). He held the ferry franchise for life; then it became the property of his son, Joseph, who held it until 1813 when he sold it to a company chartered by the NJ legislature to construct a bridge. Part of Gen. Washington's army crossed the Delaware River on this ferry during the memborable events of December 1776.
