  • Text: Biographical Information by Dennis Nicklaus:
  • Text: James grew up in Greene County, Tennessee. While James was a child there,
    Davy Crockett was born
in Greene County in 1786, just a few miles east of where the Matthews
    family lived.
  • Text: James moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky with his new bride and
several other Matthews family members in 1803.
In 1815-16, James and his family moved on to Ross County, Ohio
and settled in Twin township there. About 1827, the family
moved to Fayette County, Indiana. 6 1
  • Text: James is named as an ``early'' landowner of Rush Co., Indiana. 7
  • Text: Relatively little is known of James, compared with his father
or his children. His son, T.Q. was appointed
administrator of James' estate in Shelby County on Oct. 31, 1837. 8
  • Text: In Pulaski Co., Kentucky, James was taxed for 100 acres on Pitman
Creek for the years 1804--1813. The amount increased to 140 acres
in 1814 and changed to 80 acres in 1815. It appears that James
just rented the land and didn't own it as the tax lists show
the land entered in someone else's name (A. Russell from 1807--1814). 9
  • Text: Andrew Russell received two certificates in Pulaski Co.,
for 100 acres and 300 acres, on Pitman's creek
    in June 1801. 10
  • Note:
NAME-DEATH: The name ``James'' for TQ's father was remembered by
Gertrude ``Trudy'', born Morrison, married Heiman.
It is verified by two records: The marriage record of James
Matthews and Margaret Reed recorded in Greene Co. TN,
and the notice from Shelby Co.,IN court records where TQ Matthews is
``appointed administrator of estate of James Matthews dec. Oct. 31, 1837.''
The 16 Sep death date of TQ's father (James) is given in the TQ MATTHEWS
letter, so the two sources match up pretty well and James must be TQ's father. 8
