    Private in the British Army and fought in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

    Marriage to Elizabeth Franklin in England.

    Birth of son George in Ireland.

    James is ?Chelsea Pensioner? who commuted his military pension for land in Canada. Thousands of these pensioners came to Canada with their families unprepared for the conditions that awaited them.     Arrived in Canada about 1830.

    ?The families of Robertson, Ormsby, Cameron, Donald McLeod, and Buchanan settled also in Oro early in 1831.?

    8 Aug 1831.
    Elizabeth Ormsby paid 10 shillings for carriage of sick emigrants from Oro to York.

    Kith n? Kin suggests the Ormsbys came in 1834, but evidence above suggests that the Ormsbys arrived in 1830.

    Land patent granted.

    Text of Land Petition:
    To His Excellency John Colborne, Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Upper Canada, Major General Commanding His Majesty?s Forces therein.
    In Council.
    The Petition of James Ormsby. Humbly herewith. That your Petitioner is a discharged Soldier from the 52nd Regiment with a Pension of 10 1/2 Acres [...] as will appear by his Pension Instructions herewith enclosed that he has located upon lot no. 14 in the 12th Concession of Oro as will more? fully appear in the [?] of the [ .....] of Crown Land that he has resided upon this location upwards of three years as is attested by a certificate lodged in the [?] Office, from Mr. ? the Agent for settling that Township. He therefore humbly prays that His Excellency will be pleased to direct the Deed to [?] for the said lot. And as is duly bound. Your Petitioner will ever pray.

    The Petitioner is returned by the [?] as located on the 10 July 1831 for this East half No 14 in the 12 Concession of the Township of Oro and he having improved thereon and resided? the ? requested a ? ... may issue of it be Your Excellency?s pleasure. 25 April 1835.

    Text of Executive Council Decision:
    Praying that a Patent may [?] for the East half of Lot Number Fourteen in the Twelfth Concession of the Township of Oro for which he was located as a Discharged Soldier from the 52nd Regiment of Foot and on which he has informed the settlement Duties. Recommended.

    Served in Simcoe County Militia in 1837 Rebellion.

    According to the Story of Oro, James Ormsby was one of three cobblers working in Oro Township in 1857. He made boots in Robertson?s Corner.

    James Ormsby, born 1783, living in Oro Township. Page 19, line 24.

    1871 Canadian Census.
    James Ormsby, born about 1874 in Ireland, resided in Oro Township, Simcoe North. He worked as a shoemaker. He was a member of the Church of England (Anglican).

    ?James Sr. divided the farm, giving 50 acres each to the two surviving sons.?

    In his death certificate, he is listed as pensioner. He died of old age after ailing for years.
