Mary's cause of death was a stroke.
October 6th and 7th, 1938 Chicago Tribunes contained identical death notices for Mary. The October 8th issue contained an obituary:
The 1940 census shows that a year and a half after Mary died, there were two families living in her former residence. One was Mary's 39-year-old daughter Viola, her husband Clifford Tiepe, and their two-year-old daughter, Constance. The other family was Mary's 24 -year-old daughter Lillian, her husband Howard Curtin, and their six-month-old son, Howard.
That census page also shows that Viola and Lillian had been living in that same home in 1935.
