    ============================

    There was a John Leonard who purchased land in Franklin Co, NC 16 April 1776. It was on the Mirey Prong of Sliding Rock on the south side of Sandy Creek. He would have had to be an adult to buy land so he was born c. 1750s or earlier. This John Leonard wrote his will 9 Oct 1812 and it was probated at the March Court 1817. In his will he named four children: William, Frederick, Elizabeth who married a Blanchet, and Mary Leonard. This John Leonard also named a grandson, John Leonard, the son of William Leonard. There was no mention of a wife, indicating that she had predeceased him. If she had been alive, she would have been entitled to a 1/3 dower interest in his estate.

    Scota Leonard's will was probated September Court 1816. She names her children as: Frankey, Jackey P. Cherry, Lamefield/Samefield, Parker and Nathaniel. She is obviously not the widow of the above mentioned John Leonard. Later records in the estate papers of William Leonard (1760-1852) will show that she was the wife of John Leonard, son of William Leonard and grandson of the earlier John Leonard.

    Estate records found at the NC State Archives for "William Leonard 1852" C.R. 39.508.46, help separate the various children of William Leonard who was born 1760 in Prince George Co, Virginia and fought in the Revolution. This William was married twice, first wife was Catherine (maiden name unknown) and 2nd wife was Priscilla Stokes Leonard. William's children were: William, John, Van, Cherry, Sarah, Eaton and Curlin. After William's death there was a dispute over his estate in a Bill of Complaint, 1853, by Parker Leonard and Frances Gupton against Eaton Leonard, Curlin Leonard, Cherry Davis, James Murphy and wife Sarah, John Brewer and wife, Mary, Daniel Wester and his wife, Catharine, and Eliza Leonard, all of Franklin County. In this complaint, Eaton and Curlin Leonard were said to be illegitimate. It states that Parker Leonard, Frances Gupton and Cherry Carr were the only children left by John Leonard, a deceased son of the testator, William Leonard. James Carr of the state of Georgia was the husband of Cherry Carr.

    The complaint also states that Sarah Brewer, wife of William Brewer, Mary Brewer, wife of John Brewer, Catharine Wester, wife of Daniel Wester and Eliza Leonard were the only children of Van Leonard, a deceased son of William Leonard. It states that Eaton Leonard, Curlin Leonard, Cherry Davis, Sarah Murphy and William Leonard were the only children left by William Leonard at the time of his death in 1852. I hope this helps.
