John Westray Sr. was the oldest son of William Westwray. He acquired various pieces of land during his lifetime: 200 acres from Henry West on 5/20/1722 (this was adjacent to William Westwray's land), 100 acres from his father on1/20/1724, 100 acres from his brother? Benjamin Westray on10/25/1740, and apparently some land from Robert West as noted in John's will. John Westray was married to Ann Exum no later than 11/7/1751, as they are listed together in a deed of that date in which 200 acres that passed down from Ann's grandfather William Exum to her father Robert Exum was divided between her and her sister Susannah, who was listed as married to David Atkins. John witnessed the 10/4/1738 deed from Christopher and John Reynolds to William Hoyall. John witnessed Elizabeth Westray's 11/23/1750 will as John Westray, Sr., his son John Westray Jr. being the executor. In both cases, John made a mark (a capital I with a dash through the middle) as his"signature". (The John Weswra that witnessed Richard Worrell's 3/25/1715 will also made the same mark and may have been John Sr. too, however, it should be noted that this mark was definitely used by other people as well in those days.)John Sr.'s 12/23/1755 will named his wife Ann and six children John, Edmund and Benjamin Westray, Ann Pierce, Martha and Mary Westray, with John and Edmund Westray his executors. John's mark in this case was ||, but he was not well (he died within a month), so he may not have been able to make his usual mark.
