    Methodist Minister Rev. J.W. Bradley Dies

    The Rev. James William Bradley, who at 89 was the oldest member of the North Carolina Methodist Conference, died last night in the Glenwood Hills Nursing Home here following a long illness.

    Funeral services will be held at Hayes Barton Methodist Church here at a time to be announced. The family will be at 3011 Eton Road, Raleigh.

    A native of McDowell County, the Rev. Mr. Bradley's parents were the late Willis and Millie Ann Bradley. He was educated at Weaverville College (class of 1900) and in 1899 was admitted to the Western N.C. Conference at Concord.

    The following year he transferred to the Eastern Conference and was ordained an elder at Edenton Street Methodist Church here in 1904. During the next 45 years, he served the following churches: Ball's Creek, Troy; Rowland, Raeford, Lumberton, Hookerton, Elizabeth City, Roxboro, Siler City, Fairmont, Jonesboro Heights, Zebulon, and Princeton.

    Upon retirement in 1944, he and Mrs. Bradley made their home near Raleigh on the Cary highway and he served the nearby Apex-Macedonia charge for several years. He often filled other pulpits in this section and taught Sunday School classes.

    It was while he was at Raeford in 1909 that he married Bettie Lentz and they were companions for more than 50 years. Mrs. Bradley died in January 1960. Surviving are two children, J.W. Bradley of Raleigh and Mrs. John Cameron of Falls Church, Va; five grandchildren; and two brothers, George Bradley of Forest City and Vernon Bradley of Old Fort.

    Rev. Bradley Dies Following Lengthy Illness

    The Rev. James William Bradley, 89, died last night in Glenwood Hills Nursing Home here following a long illness. He was the oldest member of the North Carolina Methodist Conference, having been a minister for 62 years.

    A native of McDowell County, he graduated from Weaverville College and was admitted to the Western N.C. Conference in 1899.

    A year later he moved to the Eastern Conference and was ordained an elder at Edenton Street Methodist Church in 1904. He served 14 charges.

    After his retirement in 1944, he and his wife, the former Bettie Lentz, moved near Raleigh on the Cary Highway, where he served the nearby Holly Springs Apex-Macedonia charge.

    Surviving are one son, J.W. Jr. of Raleigh; one daughter, Mrs. John Cameron of Falls Church; five grandchildren; and two brothers, George of Forest city and Vernon of Old Fort.

    The family will be at 3001 Eton Road in Raleigh.

    Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Hayes Barton Methodist. The Rev. Paul Carruth, pastor of Hayes Barton Methodist; Dr. W.L. Clegg, Superintendent of the Burlington District, will officiate. The ministers of the Methodist Conference will serve as honorary pallbearers.

    Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.

    Aberdeen, Sept. 2 -- At 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist church, in Raeford, Rev. J.W. Bradley, the pastor of the church, was happily married to Miss Bettie Cutchen Lentz. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J.E. Underwood, of Rockingham. Mr. Bradley is a member of the North Carolina Conference, and is very much loved. Miss Lentz is a modest, cultured young woman, specially gifted in Church work.

    At the home of Mr. And Mrs. W.W. Gibson, residing two miles west of Red Springs, their daughter Miss Bettie Irena Gibson, was married to Rev J.W. Bradley Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The beautiful home of the family was filled with guests who had come from many neighboring towns to attend the wedding of this popular young couple.

    The ceremony was performed in the tastily decorated parlor by Rev. Dr. J.N. Cole, P.E. of Rockingham, assisted by Rev. E. McWorter, of Maxton. The bride's sister, Miss Julia Gibson, was maid of honor, and Mr. C.T. Pate, of Purvis, acted as best man. The wedding party entered the room as Mendelssohn's wedding march was being rendered by Miss Mamie Gibson, of Gibson and stood before the ministers at the hymeneal altar, under an arch of evergreens, from which was suspended a white wedding bell.

    "O Promise Me" was sung by Miss Bertie Atwell, of Red Springs, just before the ceremony. Those who were present said that they had never seen a more beautiful or impressive ceremony.

    At one o'clock a dinner was served in the dining room, suitably decorated for the occasion. Shortly after the ceremony the bridal party left by private conveyance for Rowland, where they will make their home.

    Mrs. Bradley is a young lady of refinement and culture, possessed of many accomplishments, and her sweetness of disposition and charm of manner have made for her friends throughout the State. She is a graduate of Southern Presbyterian College, and has been a most successful teacher. For two years she was a member of Marker's High school, where she gave the utmost satisfaction.

    Mr. Bradley, has for the past three years, been pastor of the Rowland Circuit Methodist churches, and is held in highest esteem and warm regard. He is a young man of splendid ability, and already the brilliant future, which all who know him, have felt would be his, is spreading out before him. His sterling worth and integrity, his cordial, genial manner and his interest and enthusiasm in the great cause he represents have won for him an enviable place among the people of Robeson.

    Many beautiful and valuable presents were received, which were n expression of the regard in which they are held.
