    ================================

    George Willis was the oldest child of James and Elizabeth. He taught school at Mill Creek -- four miles from Old Fort. He was also a shoe maker. In 1884 he bought a two-room log cabin four miles east of Old Fort, on US 70. The logs are still encased in the kitchen walls.

    GW owned land all the way to the rail road (150 acres). At that time, there was a settlement just across the rail road called Eberman, including a lumber mill and a post office.

    His oldest child in 1871 was James William -- called Willie -- and at 13 years old, Willie dug the well for this remodeled house. Later, when Will was strugling to pay his way through Weaverville College, he, too, taught school at Mill Creek.

    Millie Ann's father was a prominent medical doctor in Old Fort -- Dr. William Burgin Noblitt. He and his wife, Adeline, forbade Millia Ann to "go with" George Willis, but love prevailed. They eloped, Millie Ann having climbed out a window during the night of Jan. 12, 1871, and joined GW on his donkey.

    They set up housekeeping on Jared's Creek in a log cabin. Willie was born on Nov. 24th of that same year, as a huge snow storm raged. The chimney wall of the cabin collapsed, and GW had to dig around in the snow for rocks and limbs to rebuild the chimney.

    Millie was a devout Christian and yearned for Willie to become a minister. Being strong in math, Willie -- now Will -- decided on business, and traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to attend Business School. However, after a few months, he was so miserable that he returned home and entered Weaverville College to become a minister. He had only a dime in his pocket when he registered.

    Teaching in two-months schools, and doing all kinds of manual labor, four years passed before he graduated from the Junior College, but everything was paid for, and Will had fifty cents. He diligently studied the doctrines and diciplines of all denominations, and came to believe and love Methodism, although Millie Ann was a strong Presbyterian. (She had died from pneumonia when Will was eighteen.)

    The square honey dish -- cut-log pattern -- is all I have that came from Millie Ann's home. George Willis' fourth wife, Matt, was the only Grandmother Bradley whom I knew. She gave the honey dish to my Mother when I was a little girl -- so I inherited it. My Grandmothers, Lentz and Bradley, came to mine and John's wedding in 1940. Will honored his Mother all his life.

    --Beulah Bradley Cameron (November 20, 1998)
