Mr. Moses Andrew Parker Seriously Hurt

Accidentally Hit In The Head By A Baseball Bat Last Sunday, Blow May Prove Fatal

On Crooked Creek, near the iron bridge, a game of baseball was in progress on last Sabbath. A young man in making a last decisive hit with his bat, let it slip out of his hand, and the end struck Mr. Moses Parker on the side of the left temporal region, fracturing the skull so greatly that the brain protruded from the wound. Dr. George P. Reid was immediately called, he sent to Marionfor Dr. Cheeks on Monday. Dr. Cheek says the hurt is a severe one indeed. The man is in a precarious condition. Mr. Parker is 48 years of age, and is the father of nine children. The fearful blow was entirely accidental, but still was it not better to have been at Sabbath School! It is doubtful whether, accidents and evil influences considered; baseball is the best form of amusement. There is a proper time and way to conduct it, but the manner of conducting the game issometimes injurious, as we have noticed in some quarters, having no further reference to this one, except that it was played on the Lords Day.

Another Account Of The Distressing Accident
Old Fort News Correspondence of the Messenger

A distressing occurrence in Crooked Creek Township on Sunday last, resulted in the probable fatal wounding of Mr. Moses Parker. As I am told, a lot of young men were playing ball in an old field near Mr. Parkers house, and as he was passing through without paying much attention to what was goingon, came near the batter just as he drew back to strike the swift ball, and neither seeing the other, the bat came in contact with Mr. Parkers head, crushingthe skull so that part of the brain protruded. Dr. Cheek to consult with him. Dr. Reid had to leave before Dr. Cheek could arrive. Young Tom Hogan was the holder of the bat, but it is not deemed any fault of his, as the hit was entirelyaccidental. At this writing the wounded man is still alive.

We were sorry to learn that Mr. Moses Parkerdied on last Friday July 30 1897, morning at 9 0 clock, seemingly from the effects of the accidental stroke from the baseball bat some months ago. He had recovered and had been working on his mill, probably exciting his brain on which the skull had pressed in the injury. He was 48 years of age leaving his second wife Sarah Carolina and eight children, Lenny, Andy, Hicks, Grace, Ellen, Nora, Kate and Frederick Lee.
