William, 9th Lord d'Eyncourt, s. his grandfather when twenty-six yea rs of age, both as heir by descent as well as by virtue of the licensed en tail. He was an eminent warrior and active servant of King Edward III thr ough the glorious period of his reign, participating in the immortal achie vement of that era in France and Scotland, and on 17 October, 1346, he w as one of the commanders in the famous battle of Neville's Cross, near Dur ham. He is particularly mentioned as an object of the king's gratitu de in his letter of thanks dated 20 October, written on the occasion of th at celebrated victory when David, King of Scotland, was taken prisoner. K ing Edward being then before Calais, his queen, Philippa, is stated by so me writers to have been present at the battle. At any rate, it is clear s he was in the field prior to its commencement, when she rode in front of t he army on a white courser and, in the words of the historian, "sweetly ex horted them." She was attended by Lord d'Eyncourt at the head of her guar d, a post of honour and responsibility, which shows that he was deemed o ne of the first gentlemen of his day. This is further evidenced by the cir cumstance that John, King of France, taken prisoner at the battle of Poict iers -- who, during his captivity in England, was treated with that respec tful and generous which shed a lustre over those times -- was consign ed to Lord d'Eyncourt's custody and so remained until the period when he p assed out to Lincolnshire, under Lord d'Eyncourt's charge, to the metropol is and thence to France, King Edward himself conducting him to the sea-sid e, and the Black Prince attending him to Calais, having felt his duran ce so little personally irksome, that he afterwards returned on a vis it to King Edward, and died in England before it was completed. On 14 Ma y, 1347, Lord d'Eyncourt was commanded to attend the king before Calais, a nd was present at all the interesting scenens there enacted and, at the fi nal surrender of the place, followed by the heroic self-devotion of s ix of the inhabitants, who, with Eustace St. Pierre at their head, were sa ved by the gentle but urgent intercession of Queen Philippa, who, after t he battle of Durham, had joined her husband at Calais. Lord d'Eyncou rt d. 2 June, 1364, aged sixty-four. He m. Millicent, dau. of William, Lo rd Roos, of Hamlake. William, his eldest son, m.
