  • ID: I170
  • Name: Mary Emeline "Molly" MCINTIRE
  • Surname: McIntire
  • Given Name: Mary Emeline "Molly"
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 2 Nov 1846 in Buncombe Co., NC
  • Death: 30 Aug 1920 in Sevier Co., TN
  • Note:
"Grandmother PAINE operated the switchboard on Bird's Creek (named that for the large number of pigeons around). They would call & say I want to talk to someone, and she would plug them in. Our ring was 2 longs and 1 short. Grandmother would never let me listen in. When a storm would come up her mother would go outside and pull something so that the lightening would not come in on the lines." (Emma Deane CLARK)

"Grandmother, Mary Emeline McIntire Paine, was of Irish ancestory. She was a small woman, about 5 feet 1 or 2 inches in height, weighed around 100 pounds, was of fair complexion, which was even beautiful in her advanced years, blue eyed, and red hair. She was born in Buncombe County, NC and died in Sevier Co., TN. Grandmother was full of life and fun. She was an excellent singer, she usually sang soprano, but would sing alto equally as well. She had a beautiful voice. She liked to play games and tell tales, even tales of witchcraft, of which she knew many, some of them would make your hair stand up. She was inclined to be superstitious, and she knew several remedies there-for. She liked to have young people around her, and she loved and adored her grandchildren. Grandmother liked to visit, and when the urge struck her, she would simply harness whatever animal was available to the buggy and take off. It was a thrill to see her coming around the road towards home for a visit. The grandchildren were always welcome at Grandmother's and some of the happiest memories of my childhood are my visits to grandmother's. She always had cookies, jams or jellies available, and I never left Grandmother's empty handed. She always gave you something-an apple, pecans, a cuff link or collar button-but always something. She was of true nobility, she loved clothes, of which she had many, shoes, gloves, hats, and dresses. She loved silks and soft materials, and knew how to dress and wear them. Grandmother was what you would call a fancy dresser. She also had loads of jewelry. She loved colorful bedspreads, and could not resist an Irish peddler when he opened his pack.

Grandmother usually enjoyed good health, in the spring of 1920 she was visiting Mother, and while sitting by the fire kidding with Rev. George Houser, she suffered a stroke from which she never recovered. It took here speech. It was not the direct cause of her death, but was the contributing factor. In some manner she injured one of her arms and it got infected and blood poisoning set in." (Newton B. Clark)

I have other documents prepared by J B Waters Jr. that say that Mary's parents were Seb McIntyre and Mary Randles.

!DEATH: Certificate State of TN #153 Sevier County, TN lists here father as Cebrm McIntire b in NC and mother as Mary Randles b NC. Cause of death listed as unknown; loss of mind for 18 months but no Doctor's report. Informant was A.M. Paine

I have a photograph of her carding wool. (Sherry S. Finchum)
