    Abt 1838, Esreff "went west" until returning in 1843. In 1845, he became clerk in the store of Deacon J. M. Hayes on Factory Island, Saco, Maine. In 1847 or 1848 he began a mercantile business in Biddeford, ME with E. H. C. Hooper (Hooper & Banks), dry goods dealers.     In 1855, Esreff was on the city council of Biddeford, ME. In 1856, Esreff bought out his partner in the firm of Banks & Cooper. In 1856 and 1857, Esreff was elected to the Maine legislature.     In 1863, Maine's governor appointed Esreff the draft commissioner of York Co., ME. In 1863 & again in 1864, he was elected state senator. He was one of the Maine presidential electors for the Ulysses Grant ticket in 1868 when the electoral college voted.     Esreff continued city treasurer of Biddeford in the early 1880s. In 1883, Pres. Chester Arthur appointed him postmaster of Biddeford. He maintained this post until 1885. In 1893, Maine's governor appointed him chairman of the police commissioners of Biddeford. From 1889, he was president of the Biddeford and Saco Street Railway.
