  • Note:
DONALD WILLARD "DON" ACKMAN is my adopted father. He grew up in rural Alle gheny County, Pennsylvania. He served in the US Army during World W ar II in the European theatre as a Demolitions Expert. He married HELEN M AE KOETHE upon his return from the war. About 1952 they moved to Titusvill e, Brevard County, Florida in search of work. He began working that year w ith Florida Power & Light. After attempts at having their own children, th ey adopted me in May of 1956.

Dad suffered a great deal of tragedy in his life. First, he endured a bitt er war overseas where he watched fellow comrades die. He enlisted in 19 43 and was sent overseas sometime after Boot Camp just like thousands of o ther fellow patriots. He said he landed six days after the "D-Day" invasi on at Omaha Beach. He was very lucky to survive the war. Upon his retu rn he endured the horrible working conditions of the Pennsylvania steel mi lls which was a feat in itself. Their deplorable working conditions darn n ear killed him more so than the war. In 1966 he lost the only person he ev er seemed to care for, Helen Mae Koethe (my mother). I do believe th at my father also "died" that day. In December 1966 his father (my grandfa ther), Charles Edward Ackman, died while on a fishing trip together. Th en my mother's brother, Richard Darrell Koethe, II, died suddenly in Orlan do, Orange County, FL August of 1967 of a heart attack. He just collaps ed over dead at work. Perhaps because of all this calamity and his weak na ture, is partly why our family became very fragmented. It truly was a stre ssful time for all of us. It didn't help that Dad had a singularly unpleas ant personality and could be very difficult to be close to. In his last mo nths, however, he became somewhat more pleasant to be around.

After my mother, Helen, died August 17, 1966, Dad married & divorced Mr s. Eugenia Lucille "Jean" Kaiser Drawdy of Titusville, FL (all within 9 mo nths time). Mrs. Drawdy had two daughters of her own from a previous marri age, Paula and Deborah "Debbie" Drawdy. Dad & Jean married and divorced wi thin 9 months time. Dad then married a third time to Mrs. Myra (Cook) Mor gan Ricketts of Kentucky in June of 1968. They married in the Unitarian Ch urch, Orlando, Orange County, Florida. He had only known her for a few wee ks. Myra had been living in Orlando, FL at the time of their marriage. I t hink she was living with or near her sister Mrs. Roenia Gladys Cook Didd le and was working for a bank there. Uncle Jerry and Aunt Roenia Diddle we re only my step-Uncle and step-Aunt but they were always very kind to m e. They were nice folks and I miss them. Both suffered from terrible bou ts of various cancers which finally claimed their lives.

Dad retired February 1986 from Florida Power & Light (FP&L) as a Lineman w ith over 33 years service. He had lived in Titusville, Brevard County, Fl orida at 17 (later changed to #55) North Holiday Lane for about 40 year s. They didn't move permanently to North Carolina until August of 198 8. We had the same phone number the whole time we / they lived in Titusvil le. He and Myra were currently living in the Washburn Community of Bosti c, Rutherford County, North Carolina. They moved there to be near her so n, Paul Ricketts.

Myra died January 18th, 2004, in the Henderson Nursing Home, Forest Cit y, NC and Dad died January 3rd, 2006, while undergoing kidney dialys is in Forest City. Both were cremated. Myra's ashes may be with her son, P aul, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dad's ashes were spread over my mother 's grave in Titusville, Brevard County, Florida.

    Dad's Memorial:
