From the WorldConnect Database: "Sanford-Shulsen Family", b y Evelyn Beran:

"The old Andrew Ward genealogy identified Andrew's parent s as Sir Richard Warde of Gorleston or Homersfield, count y Suffolk, and Ann Gunville of Gwindale, York, England. Col . Charles Banks investigated this claim and found no Richar d Ward, and no Gunville family in that area -- all referenc es were fictitious. Jacobus says Andrew may have been so n of Ralph Ward, nephew of John of Stratford, and cousin o f Dr. John Ward and Edward Rawson (Sec. of MA Colony) -- bu t this is not positively proved. Edward's father, David Raw son, named in his will John Ward and Andrew Ward (a minor) , son of his uncle Ralph.

Andrew settled first at Watertown, MA, where he was mad e a freeman 14 May 1634. The Patterson genealogy reports t hat he owned a homestead a Watertown until 1642.

He was an original settler at Wethersfield, CT in 1635.

On 3 Mar 1636 he, with Roger Ludlow and six others, was app ointed by the General Court of Massachusetts to govern th e Colony of Connecticut for one year from that date, or unt il it should become organized. He was therefore one of th e first legislative body held at Newtown for Hartford on 2 6 April 1636. He was Representative 1636 and 1637.

Andrew was a member of the Upper house of the General Cour t of Massachusetts when war was declared on the Pequot Indi ans 1 May 1637. He also served twice in the lower house 16 37/1638. In 1638 he was appointed with Capt. John Mason an d Mr. Allen to treat with the Indians at Agawam (or Springf ield).

In 1638 he removed to New Haven, and on 4 June 1639 his nam e is found among the free planters at the gathering of th e Church at New Haven.

At the General Court, 4 March 1640, Andrew Ward and Rober t Coe of Wethersfield were appointed to treat with the Cour t relative to the plantation of Stamford (or Toquams) whic h had about that time been purchased by the town of Wethers field. On 26 Mar 1640, he was appointed Constable of Stamf ord. At the General Court, 27 Oct 1641, he with Francis Be ll represented Stamford and New Haven at that Court, and th ey were admitted as freemen. At the General Court 5 Apri l 1643, he wrote a letter in the name of the freeholders o f Stamford introducing John Underhill and Richard Gildersle eve as representatives of Stamford at that Court, and at th at same Court requested that a Magistrate be appointed fo r Stamford. At this same Court Andrew Ward and Robert Co e were appointed to assist at the next General Court of Ele ction at New Haven. In 1644 and 1646 he was elected as Dep uty from Stamford.

Several sources place him at Hempstead, Long Island in 1643 , and Bolton's History of Westchester County NY mentions hi m in the town of Eastchester. Stephen Jenkins, in "The Sto ry of the Bronx," tells that on 23 March 1664, King Charle s by royal patent vested in his brother, the Duke of York a nd Albany, the Dutch province of New Netherland. An expedit ion of four ships of war and 450 land troops, the whole und er command of Colonel Richard Nicholls, accompanied by Gov . John Winthrop of CT, appeared off New Amsterdam 6 Septemb er 1664 and demanded the surrender of the province. Gov. S tuyvesant reluctantly surrendered. The new colony was name d New York, and the boundary between it and Connecticut se t at a point on Long Island Sound 20 miles from Hudson's Ri ver, running north to the Massachusetts line. A number o f the Long Island inhabitants were Connecticut men. Thoma s Pell claimed to have purchased Westchester from the India ns in 1654. He claimed the land belonged to Connecticut. O n 24 June 1664 Pell granted to James Eustis, Philip Pinckne y, John Tompkins, Moses Hoit, Samuel Drake, Andrew Ward, Wa lter Lancaster, Nathaniel Thompkins and Samuel Ward "to th e number of ten families, to settle down at Hutchinsons, th at is where the house stood at the meadows and uplands, t o Hutchinson's River, they paying according to ye proportio n of the charges which was disburst for the purchase, and o ther necessary charges, etc." They were all Connecticut me n from Fairfield. The settlement became known as the "Te n Farms," and later as Eastchester.

On 6 October 1651, at a General Court at Hartford, Andrew W ard, with John Banks of Fairfield Connecticut, were appoint ed to settle the estate of Peter Johnson of Fairfield. A t this same Court he was appointed an Assistant "to join wi th the Magistrates for the execution of Justice in the town s of Connecticut by the seaside." That same year he bough t land in Fairfield, though some sources place him there a s early as 1649/1650.

The will of Andrew Ward of Fairfield is dated 8 June 1659 ; inventory was taken 18 October 1659. In his will "drawn b y his own hand" he being "strong, merry and well both in mi nd and body," he mentioned his wife Esther, son John 50 wh en 21, dau. Sarah 40; dau. Abigail 40 when 18, housing an d land to sons Andrew and Samuel, to be divided when the el dest (Andrew) is 21; the rest of his children to have ful l portions except Edmund who is to have 20 "if he come t o this place." Esther and son William were granted adminis tration. "
