RETIRED BOARD CHAIRMAN OF PILLSBURY DIES

MINNEAPOLIS---John S. Pillsbury Sr., planned a diplomatic career after he graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1900. But he and his twin brother were needed in the family milling firm when their father and great uncle died.
Pillsbury, 89, who died Wednesday night at a Palm Beach, Fla., hospital, served for 58 years on the board of directors of the Pillsbury Co. He was chairman of the board from 1932 until he retired in 1952. He continued on the board until 1965, when he became director emeritus.
Pillsbury had planned to go to France at the turn of the century to study international law and the French language, then enter the diplomatic corps.
However, his father died while he was a college and his great uncle, John Sargent Pillsbury, died shortly after his graduation.
His father founded the Pillsbury firm in 1869. His great uncle, who served three terms as governor of Minnesota, was co-founder.
Pillsbury worked in all departments of the flour milling company for six years, learning the business. He became sales manager, secretary-treasurer, vice president and board chairman.
He took his greatest pride, however, in returning control of the company from British to American hands.
In 1899, English investors purchased a majority of the stock and the company was known as Pillsbury-Washburn Flour Co. Ltd., during the period of their control.
John S. Pillsbury, his twin, Charles and Alfred Fiske Pillsbury, son of Gov. Pillsbury, formed a management team that successfully fought off attempts by a New York group to take over the company and merge it with a flour milling trust. They also saved the firm from going into receivership around 1909.
In 1923, they organized a group to buy out the British stock holdings.
Pillsbury introduced a technique for milling semolina flour. This flour, made from durum wheat, is used in making macaroni. He learned of the manufacturing method on a trip to Sicily, Italy and France.
Pillsbury was a lifelong Republican. One of his sons, John Jr., president of Northwestern National Life Insurance Co., Minneapolis, was an unsuccessful candidate for the GOP nomination for governor in 1965.
His wife of 57 years, Eleanor also survives.
Another son, George, is vice president of Pillsbury. There are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas M. Crosby, Oronoco, Minn., and Mrs. Stanley R. Resor, Washington, D. C. wife of the secretary of the army.
    Two other sons died earlier.
Pillsbury also was a director of Northwestern National Bank, Northwestern Bancorporation, Meriden Iron Co., and was president of Sargent Land Co., and the Keewatin Mining Co.
The Pillsburys have a home in Lake Minnetonka west of Minneapolis and spent their winters at their home at Palm Beach.
The funeral will be in Plymouth Congregation Church, Minneapolis, at a time to be set later.
