    ROBERT (DE VERE), EARL OF OXFORD, 1st son and heir, born probably circa24 June 1257. In 129 6 he served in Gascony, where he still was at thetime of his father's death; but he did homag e at Neyland by Bury 5December, and was invited (30 December) to the wedding of PrincessEliza beth to the Count of Holland, 7 January, at lpswich. He was summonedto the Assembly of Peers , 24 February 1296/7, at Sidisbury. During theKing's absence in Flanders (August 1297 to Marc h 1297/8) he was a memberof the Prince's Council. He was summoned for service in Scotland, 12 98 to1301, and in July 1298 he served with the 4th division at the battle ofFalkirk. In 1299- 1301 he served overseas. He was summoned to Edward I'slast Parliament at Carlisle in 1306, bu t was excused by the King. He wassummoned to the Coronation of Edward II, 25 February 1307/8 . In thefollowing year he was one of the five Earls who, owing to their hostilityto Gavaston , refused to attend the secret Parliament at York. He wassummoned to serve against the Scot s in nearly every year from 1309 to1323, and again in 1327. In 1322 he was in arms with the K ing atLichfield against the Earl of Lancaster; and in 1324 he was summoned forthe projected e xpedition in defence of Aquitaine. At the Coronation ofQueen Philippe, 1330, he claimed the r ight to officiate as herChamberlain, and his claim was allowed. He tried repeatedly to recove rthe office of Chamberlain of England, but the claim was still pending athis death. His onl y son having died s.p., he had licence on 15 March 1330to entail his estates on his nephew Jo hn. He was a benefactor to EarlsColne, Hatfield Broadoak, and Netley Abbey.

    He married Margaret, sister of Edmund, 1st LORD MORTIMER, of Wigmore, anddaughter of Roger D E MORTIMER, by Maud, 1st daughter and coheir ofWilliam DE BRIOUZE. She died probably circa 12 96-97, and was buried atthe Grey Friars, Ipswich. He died s.p.s., 17 April 1331, and was buri edat Earls Colne. [Complete Peerage X:219-20, (transcribed by DaveUtzinger)]
