      CHILDS, HARVEY C. - Washington County Deputy Sheriff, Calais. Harvey Colin Childs, 79, died July 12, 2002 at a Bangor hospital. He was born at Portland, March 1, 1923 the son of Alvin Pipper and Edith Childs. Harvey served with the U.S. Navy as a Seabee in the Philippine Islands during WWII. After the war he worked as a Fireman and Guard for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Quoddy Village Project. He was a Maine State Trooper from 1951-1958 and later served as an Investigator for the Maine Attorney General. He retired as Regional Supervisor from the Department of Human Sevices' Legal Dept. After his "retirement" he served Washington County as a Deputy Sheriff and worked as a Safety Officer with Thomas Dicenzo Inc. In 1994 Harvey received the Venerable Order with the Knights of Michael the Archangel (The Patron Saint of Police Officers) from the Chapel of the Police Hall of Fame at Miami, Fl. Harvey was a Communicant of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Calais and was a Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree St. Croix Council #149 Knights of Columbus of Calais Survivors include his devoted wife of 55 years Geraldine (McShane) Childs of Calais, two sons: Gregory A. Childs, and his wife Karen of Scotch Ridge, N.B., Canada, Brian P. Childs of Bocabec Bay, N.B., Canada; a daughter Cheryl A, Childs and special friend Donna Redding of Calais; two grandchildren: Christopher J. Childs and his partner Margaux of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Travis J. Childs of Scotch Ridge, N.B., Canada; several nieces and nephews. Harvey was predeceased by a special grandson Jeremiah J. Childs. Friends may visit with the family at the Scott Wilson Funeral Home Monday 7-9 p.m. where prayers will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Very Reverend Mark Nolette, Tuesday 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Calais. Burial with military honors will follow at Calais Cemetery. Those who wish may make donations in Harvey's memory to the "Building Fund" of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Calais or the Charity of one's choice.
