      BURTON E. AVERY

      BAILEYVILLE and EASTPORT Burton E. Avery, 75, went to be with the Lord Sept. 15, 2004, at a Bangor hosp-ital, surrounded by family after a lengthy illness. He was born July 13, 1929, in Eastport the son of Seth E. and Mary (Childs) Avery II.

      He attended Eastport schools and enlisted in the army at an early age. He was a veteran of the Korean War, earned a good conduct medal with two bronze stars. He returned from the U.S. Coast guard earning the rank of E-6 engineer. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 3, and the Boyd Smith VFW Post No. 9779 of Calais. In later years, he was employed as a greeter at Wal-Mart and had many friends and acquaintances.

      He was predeceased by his parents, and five brothers, Kenneth, Hollis, Charles, Seth and Ray; two sisters, Hanefa and Mary; and a great friend, Earle Forsyth. He is survived by one sister, Phyllis "Ginny" Mahar Coons; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Avery and Edna Avery; many nieces and nephews, three stepchildren, Bob Gallway, and son, Kevin, of Baileyville; Grant and Connie Gallupe, and children Eric and Anna of Kingfisher, Okla.; John Gallupe of Bangor and his beloved Ming and kitty cats.

      Burton enjoyed his visits to Eastport at Harris Point with friends and family. He loved rides to the breakwater and around town. Burton enjoyed golf He will be sadly missed. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Calais.
