Evelyn and Rodney had a stillborn child a few years after they were married. They divorced in 1993.
Rod graduated from Norway High School in 1953 as the Salutatorian of his class. That fall, he entered Maine Maritime Academy where he earned a B.S. Degree in Marine Science and a commission as Ensign in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He served in the Navy from June of 1956 to April of 1958, then spent the next 3 1/2 years as a deck officer on Mobil Oil Company oil tankers. Between shifts on the tankers, he studied Accounting. In December of 1962, having completed his military service, he began working for the Staples and Boyce Accounting firm in Portland.
In 1965, he took a leave of absence from his job as an accountant to serve as Assistant Legislative Finance Officer for the 102nd Maine Legislature. This was the beginning of a long and illustrious career in Government, from which he retired in December of 1996.
In 1967, he was elected to the Maine State Legislature as one of the City of Portland's Representatives. Legislation he sponsored not only earned him awards, but he was quickly recognized as a knowledgable and valued man for Maine. Over the next several years, he served in numerous capacities: Deputy Commissioner (and later, Commissioner) of the Maine Department of Finance and Administration, State Controller, State Budget Officer, State Treasurer and State Auditor (twice), among others.
State and local officials from throughout Maine gathered at the Maine Civic Center on January 15, 1997, to honor Rodney for his years of exemplary service to Maine. The Governor proclaimed that date "Rodney Scribner Day" in the State of Maine. The Scribner Family is proud of Rodney, who continued the honorable Scribner tradition of service to others, to the State and to the Nation.
