Dr Francis Bertody was born in Isaphan, Persia, his mother a Persian -his father an Italian. He was educated at the University of Padua - was amember of the College of Physicians of Venice - Physician to Monsieur theCount de Provence, brother of Louis XVI, who afterwards reigned as LouisXVIII. How long before the breaking out of the French Revolution he cameto this country I do not know. He died when I was 6 years old, and Ithink he must have been here nearly 20 years. I remember him as a talldistinguished-looking man with powdered hair who spoke to us always inFrench, for though master of nine languages, he would never attempt tospeak English. But with all his learning and distinction I fear that henever attained the distinction of a Christian, for I have heard Ma speakof long arguments between him and Bishop Chevereux in which he was alwaysadverse to the Christian faith, and yet all his children were baptised bythe Bishop and his successor, Mr (Msr.?) Matignon. So you see by baptismI belong to the Catholic Church.
