  • Name: Hans Peter Umstadt
  • Name: John Peter Umstat
  • Birth: ABT. 1650
  • Death: AFT. 14 OCT 1710 in , Philadelphia, PA
  • Note:
Hans Peter is also known as John Peter.

Hans Peter was of Kriegsheim, Germany, in 1685 when he applied for a passport. While in Rotterdam, on Aug. 16, 1685, he purchased land in Germantown, PA. The deed describes him as lately resident in Krisheim (Kriegsheim). Many sources state he is from Krefeld (Crefeld), but the original documentation presented on the Umstead Family Genealogy Central web site indicates otherwise.

Hans Peter arrived at Philadelphia on Oct. 12, 1685, on the ship Francis & Dorothy. With him were his wife Barbara and children Johannes, Margaretha & Eve. They settled in Germantown, now a part of Philadelphia. Hans Peter was described as a weighmaster. He signed a petition for defeat of a tax bill on May 10, 1692. He was on the May 15, 1693 assessment list.

Hans Peter & Barbara are said to be buried in the Lower Skippack Mennonite Cemetery, Skippack, Montgomery Co., PA, but no markers for them remain.

Some sources say son Johannes married Mary Pannebecker (Pennebecker), but there is no documentation for this. The statement can be traced to a misinterpretation of the relationship between Hendrick Pannebecker & Johannes, which is based on Hendrick's marriage to Johannes' sister, Eve, rather than to Johannes' marriage to an unknown sister of Hendrick's.
