  • Note:
Her parents were married on the 17th March 1834 at Kenton . Mary was the fourth of seven children, who were Lucy Bedf ord Allen (the only one christened at Kenton on the 18th Fe bruary 1835). The rest of the children were christened in S t. Mary's Walthamstow and these were Richard Collyns Allen , (later the Revd), christened 16th February 1836; Eleanor a Maria, christened 13th September 1837; Mary herself , bor n 15th January 1839, christened 24th February 1839; Joh n - born 2nd June 1840, christened 28th June 1840; Edward W illiam, born 4th September 1843, christened 2nd October 184 3; Arthur Bedford born 13th July 1850, christened 10th Augu st 1850.

Her father Richard Bedford and his father Richard James All en were both prosperous coal merchants and property-owners . Richard James Allen with others, as an Overseer of Sewers , had been philanthropically responsible for laying the dra inage system in Whitechapel, before later purchasing proper ty in Essex.

Mary Allen's mother (maiden name Lucy Welch Collyns) had a n ancestry almost as interesting as that of Mary's husband , John Robert Gibson, which is why I have taken the troubl e to give it separate treatment. It would seem that in he r widowhood Lucy Allen spent the last years of her life li ving with her daughter and Mary's probably rather ego-centr ic husband, John. It is amusing to think that if her son-in -law ever openly expressed any pride in his own ancestry, t hat she might have responded silently or even overtly in se ntiments to the effect "and you are not the only one, eithe r!"

In tracing the ancestry of Lucy Welch Allen (Collyns) I hav e found my task relatively easy entirely owing to the indef atigable industry of the Devon archivist Burnett-Morris. H e went blind at some time during the second World War throu gh having painstakingly written in his own handwriting ove r a million 4 x 5 inch record cards relating to the whole h istory of the county. His intention was to write a histor y of Devon, but in the end his lasting memorial are the rec ord cards themselves, which spared no effort to point out a nything about Devon which was the least bit interesting o r of value to researchers. Other Devon archivists had als o been indefatigable before World War II in typing abstract s of old county Wills, and this has also been useful to m e and others, since in many cases the wills themselves fail ed to survive through enemy bombing during World War II. Be cause the history of the Collyns family is relatively compl ete and straight-forward, I shall follow the natural proced ure of my previous account of the Gibson family and begin a t the earliest period and work my way through to the presen t day.
