    Mr. Walter Dare Scott, District Officer, Raub, Pahang, wh o was born in July, 1870, is a son of Mr. W. Ramsay Scott , a former member of the Straits Settlements Legislative Co uncil. He was educated at Crawford College, Maiden- head, a nd joined the army as a second lieutenant in the 3rd Battal ion of the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1890. In the followin g year he entered the service of the Selangor Government, a nd has filled during his varied career the posts of Actin g District Officer at Ulu Langat, Kuala Selangor, Kuala Pil ah, Jelebu, and Batang Padang ; Assistant District Office r at Kuala Lumpor, Sungei Besi, and Krian ; Assistant Secre tary to the Selangor Government and to the British Residen t of Selangor ; .Acting Magistrate at Seremban and Kuala Lu mper ; and Acting Collector of Land Revenue and Registrar o f Titles, Seremban. In October, 1906, he was appointed to t he substantive office he now holds, but recently proceede d to Kuala Kangsa to act as District Officer there. He is a n enthusiastic footballer, and captained the Selangor tea m for about five years. Big-game shooting has in Mr. Scot t a follower of no small skill, eight elephants and a selad ang having fallen to his gun, whilst he is quite an authori ty on the pursuit of smaller game and snipe.

    The Ladies' Lawn Tennis Club, Singapore, was founded by th e most influential residents of the settlement in 1884, an d the original membership was between 90 and roo. The use o f about four acres of land lying between Bras Basah Road an d Stamford Road was granted by the Government to the club , and upon this ground there are now twelve excellent tenni s-courts and two croquet greens. Three years ago a well-equ ipped pavilion was erected at a cost of 5,000 dollars. Thi s has been paid for, and the club has a substantial credi t balance. From the first both sexes have been admitted t o the club, although a distinction has been made by describ ing ladies as members and gentlemen as sub- scribers. The l atter are not eligible to serve upon the committee, excep t in ex-officio capacities. Two tournaments are held each y ear, and in these the standard of play is almost as high a s that of the best players in the cricket club. The members hip is limited to 250, and the full complement has now bee n reached. The entrance-fee is 10 dollars, and the annual s ubscription for both ladies and gentlemen is 12 dollars. Mr s. Salzmann, Mrs. Saunders, Mrs. Bowes, Mrs. Murray, and M rs. Dare form the present committee. Mr. M. J. Upcott is t he hon. sec, and Mr. H. M. Cantrell the hon. treasurer.
