Colonel John Ogle was an English soldier in the 19th Foot R egiment, although little else is known about his backgroun d. In 1790 or 1791 he married Julia Eliza Barton, daughte r of Susanna Barton and niece of the late Richard Jackson , and Colonel and Mrs. Ogle lived on the Forkhill estate t hroughout the 1790s. In 1796, Ogle received permission to f orm a local yeomanry corps and headed the Forkhill Yeomanr y throughout the years of rebellion. Local legends aboun d about Ogle, who was reputed to have been a rough authorit y figure. The «u»Northern Star,«/u» in particular, portraye d him as a brutish soldier. His wife, Julia Eliza, had died in Dublin sever al months before.
