      Text: Adam DOWNING: Col. Adam Downing who went on to Ireland's Wi lliam III,and held the rank of colonel in the Army. He wa s present at the siegeof Derry, and there gave early and si gnal proofs of his courage.Subsequently he raised the bod y of men at his own expense, and servedduring the war in Ir eland, participating in the battle of the Boyne,and contrib uting immensely by his gallantry and skill, to the successo f the party with which he was engaged. For these services h e receivedthe appointments of deputy governor of the Count y of Derry, Col. ofthe militia, and one of the commissioner s of array, and was alsogranted by his royal master, a larg e tract of land in the County ofDerry, still possessed by h is descendent. He married Margaret,daughter of Thomas Jacks on, Esq. of Coleraine, ancestor of Sir GeorgeJackson, Bart , by Margaret Beresford, of the noble family ofWaterford, a nd had a son and successor,

      John Downing Esq. of Dawsons Bridge who inherited the spiri t of hisfather, and raised during the rebellion of 1745, a t considerableexpense, a body of men to serve his King an d country in a moment ofgreat difficulty and danger. He mar ried Margaret daughter and heir ofthe Rev. J. Rowe, D. D. , descended from an ancient Devonshire family,and had thre e sons, namely,
      Clotworthy, his heir, who had two sons, John and Gifford. T he latter,a military officer, was severely wounded at Coron a.

      Dawson Downing Esq. of Rowesgift in the County of Londonder ry, marriedKatherine Fullerton, niece and heiress of Alexan der Fullerton, Esq. ofBallintoy Castle, in the County of An trim, descended from a branch ofthe ancient Scottish famil y of that name and had one son, GeorgeAlexander, who havin g inherited a considerable property from his greatuncle, as sumed, in compliance with that gentleman's testamentaryinju nction, the surname in arms of Fullerton, and is the presen tGeorge Alexander Fullerton, Esquire of Westwood and Ballin toy.
