Ventura County, California, Biographies, 1926
Among the residents of Ventura County who because of their forceful personalities have won a high place in public esteem, stands Elisha E. Converse, whose well improved ranch is located east of Santa Paula. Mr. Converse is a native of Malden, Massachusetts, born on the 6th of July, 1894. He received a good education, attending the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and then entering Yale University, from which he was graduated with the class of 1916. He then entered the bank of Estabrook Company, in Boston, with which he was connected at the time the United States entered the World war. He was a member of the Massachusetts Naval Reserves, and when the call came for active service he enlisted in the United States navy, with which he remained during the period of the war. He served with the fleet in Atlantic waters and in armed guard duty on cargo transports.
On his return to civil life, in 1919, Mr. Converse came to Ventura County and after spending six months in search of a satisfactory place to locate permanently he bought from L. Mills three hundred and thirty acres, old mission land, called the Lingdooley ranch, which is most eligibly located in a canyon east of Santa Paula. Here he erected a beautiful home, in the Spanish style of architecture, in which is to be found every modern convenience. The grounds have been beautified in harmony with the building, and the ranch is now one of the show places of the valley. It is well cultivated and devoted mainly to fruit raising, there being seventy-five acres in apricots, ten acres in oranges and eight acres in lemons. In 1926 Mr. Converse bought forty-eight acres at Somas, which has been planted to Valencia oranges and walnuts.
Mr. Converse was married to Miss Lilian Taylor, who was born and reared in Toowoomba, Australia, and to them have been born four daughters: Gildee, Lilian, Diana and Dorro. Gildee is deceased and to her memory Mr. and Mrs. Converse erected and donated to the city of Santa Paula the Gildee Converse Memorial Day Nursery, a charitable institution which is supported by the civic bodies of the community.
Fraternally Mr. Converse is a member of Malden (Massachusetts) Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. He is a man of culture and refinement, broad-minded and liberal in his views, but with decided opinions on the great issues of the day. Since becoming a resident of Ventura County he has earnestly supported every measure or enterprise for the betterment of the community and has made a deep impress on the minds of all with whom he has come in contact, commanding the respect and confidence of the people generally.
